Working Horse WineryThe winery part is self-explanatory: the Working Horse Winery produces small lots of premium wines made from the vinifera grown on the farm. But, horse? Yeah, two Suffolk Draft mares, to be precise, each weighing in at one ton. Well, if you’re gonna produce organic wine, why not use, ummm, organic horsepower! The mares, Meagan (at left) and Greta, toil away at Working Horse Winery, Vineyard and Farm, situated in Peachland, south of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. The team, each descendants of English-bred draft horses, work the 22-acre farm individually and together, helping to preserve heritage plant and animal species. bc_whw_eisweinThe farm was first homesteaded at the turn of the last century and abandoned in the 1930s. Not until 1973 was the farm revitalized, when present owner Tilman Hainle planted the organic vineyards by hand. Historic vineyards and heritage farming techniques blend seamlessly with a contemporary approach to premium organic winemaking producing Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Rare Breed White and Tilman Ice — not to mention extensive organic gardens. Road Trips Foodies can take a sip for themselves on site this winter, as the farm will welcome overnight guests at the new Inn at Working Horse, which promises vineyard views and organically-inspired meals, plus personalized guided tours of the farm and an Icewine Interpretation Centre. The centre includes historic artifacts and information documenting the birth of icewine in North America, as well as displays that demonstrate how Canadian Icewine is made today.
