christmas_marketsIt’s hard to think of a better way to get in the holiday spirit than attending a Christkindlmarkt! For those of you not conversant in German, this is a traditional Christmas market such as those held outdoors in town squares in Germany and elsewhere in Europe since the 1400s. Fortunately for American Road Trips Foodies, these markets also are held now in many cities across the United States. Specialty foods include gluhwein and pfefferkuchen — and there’s something just seasonally perfect about standing outside and sipping a warm mug of hot, spiced wine on a cold winter’s day!

Chicago’s 14th Annual Christkindl Market opens Wednesday (November 25, 2009) and runs through December 24, 2009. It’s held right downtown in the Loop on Daley Plaza, 50 West Washington Street, Chicago, Illinois.

Christmas Village in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is open Thanksgiving (November 26, 2009) through December 24, 2009, at Dilworth Plaza on the west side of the City Hall. Vendors in more than 50 wooden booths and timber houses forming a “medieval village” will sell European food, sweets and drinks as well as international seasonal holiday gifts, ornaments and high quality arts and crafts.

Christkindlmarkt in DenverThe 10th annual Christkindl Market in Denver begins Friday (November 27, 2009) in Skyline Park, 1825 Arapahoe Street, Denver, Colorado. It ends December 24, 2009, and is sponsored by the German American Chamber of Commerce Colorado Chapter and the German Cultural Foundation of the Rocky Mountains.

Also opening Friday (November 27, 2009) is the Christkindlmarkt in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Its closing date is December 20, 2009.

The Old World Christmas Market in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, is open December 4-13, 2009, featuring international and regional artisans, European delicacies and German Christmas music.
