Bridgeville Apple-Scrapple Festival

Submitted by on October 3, 2009 – 11:57 pmNo Comment

Bridgeville Apple-Scrapple FestivalApples and scrapple are celebrated together on October 9 and 10, 2009, in Bridgevile, Delaware (this marks the 18th Annual Apple Scrapple Festival). Festivities begin at 4 p.m. on Friday evening (October 9), with the carnival, food court and street dance. Things start up again on Saturday morning (October 10) with an “all you can eat” scrapple breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Be sure to stick around for the Mayors’ Scrapple Sling, wherein bragging rights (and the title of “King of Sling”) will go to the mayor or president of a council in Sussex County who slings a package of scrapple the farthest. The Scrapple Chunkin’ Contest also is held on Saturday: contestants chuck packages of scrapple “shot-put” style.

For Road Trips Foodies who aren’t familiar with scrapple:
Scrapple, a Pennsylvania Dutch treat, is traditionally a mush of pork scraps and trimmings combined with cornmeal and flour, often buckwheat flour and spices. (Pon haus, similar but NOT THE SAME, uses only the broth from cooked meat.) The mush is formed into a semi-solid congealed loaf, and slices of the scrapple are then pan-fried before serving. Scraps of meat left over from butchering, not used or sold elsewhere, were made into scrapple to avoid waste.
